I wanna wake up in that city that doesn’t suck

I want to be a part of it, Aberdeen, Aberdeen

Seriously though, I visited Aberdeen back in November for an OpenStreetMap hackathon weekend hosted by the 57north hacklab and was really pleasantly surprised by what I saw there. I can’t understand why Aberdeen has such a bad reputation as a city. It has a charming mediaeval heart, sensitively overwritten by some fine Regency architecture and some excellent early modernity. Sure, the commercial centre may be a giant Tottenham Court Road, but i’ve seen much worse in the hearts of once-fine English, Spanish and German city centres.

So I’m visiting again this weekend for #codethecity3 where I hope to support any and all projects in getting to grips with geographic data and re-using OpenStreetMap in ways that amount to much more than dots on a map (though dots on a map are a fine place to start). I followed #codethecity2 on Twitter and wished I was there, which is pretty unusual for a city hackathon; I still have an active boycott of Edinburgh Apps.

If I can make it there,
I’ll make it anywhere.
It’s up to you, Aberdeen, Aberdeen
